The Rainbow of Heisey Colors

Heisey produced over 30 colors during their 63 years of production. This chart is being created to assist you in understanding what each color actually looks like. We will continue to add examples as we obtain additional items. Please click on thumbnail picture, to see an actual example of that color.

 

Color Name- Alexandrite

Years Produced- 1930-1935

Description- light Lavender color, often with distinct red highlights on the edges. This is a dichromatic color. When seen under fluorescent light, the lavender color takes on a light blue or gray appearance.
 

Color Name- Amber

Years Produced- 1926-1938

Description- a pale amber color often referred to as Honey amber. Produced periodically but was not a major production color. Very few items were made in this "Honey" color. Refer also to the Harvey & Sultana Ambers.
 

Color Name- Bi-Colors

Years Produced-

Description- While Heisey often combined a color with crystal, it rarely used two glass colors for one item. Two color combinations seen are Flamingo/Moongleam, Moongleam/Hawthorne, Sahara/Alexandrite, and Zircon/Sahara. Any two color combination is considered to be scarce.
 

Color Name- Black

Years Produced-

Description- an experimental color. Very few items were made in this color.
 

Color Name- Blue (Trial Blue)

Years Produced-

Description- an experimental light blue color very similar to Cambridge's " Moonlight Blue"
 

Color Name- Canary, Early

Years Produced- 1897-1905

Description- transparent yellow green color. A uranium based color, often referred to as Vaseline glass.
 

Color Name- Canary, Late

Years Produced- 1923-1924

Description- a pale transparent yellow greenish color. There is a noticeable difference from the richer earlier color.
 

Color Name- Canary, Visible Ware

Years Produced- 1919

Description- a transparent pale yellow green color unlike either of the other two Canary colors. This color was used with the extremely short lived Visible Cooking Ware products.
 

Color Name- Canary, Opalescent

Years Produced-

Description- Considered an experiential color. A few early Canary items have been seen with a distinct opalescent edge. These pictures furnished Compliments of the Virtual Museum at PatternGlass
 

Color Name- Clear Opalescent

Years Produced-

Description- Considered an experiential color. A few early Patterns in Crystal have been seen with a distinct opalescent edge.
 
 

Color Name- Cobalt, refer to Stiegel Blue

 

Color Name- Crystal

Years Produced- 1895-1957

Description- a sharp pure clear glass. The "colour" is slightly to the cold, blue side of crystal.
 
 

Color Name- Custard, refer to Ivorina Verde

 

Color Name- Dawn

Years Produced- 1955-1957

Description- transparent deep gray-black color with strong overtones of purple.

Color Name- Emerald

Years Produced- 1899

Description- transparent bright deep green often decorated with gold.
 

Color Name- Emerald Black

Years Produced- circa 1897

Description- an unusual deep dark almost black emerald found on a few very early patterns.
 

Color Name- Flamingo

Years Produced- 1925-1935

Description- transparent pink color having a hint of orange. It is not unusual to find various shades.
 

Color Name- Gold

Years Produced-

Description- An experiential color similar to Marigold but lacking its greenish overtones. Additionally this color turns orange under black light.
 

Color Name- Gold Opalescent

Years Produced-

Description- An experiential color similar to Marigold but lacking its greenish overtones but having opalescent on the edges. This color turns orange under black light.
 

Color Name- Gold Ruby

Years Produced-

Description- An experimental cranberry pink color made by dissolving actual gold into the glass batch. Three items are known: A #3390 Cassonne water pitcher, a #338 carnation vase, & a #442 Janice vase. The pink color is mottled with clear glass in the last two items.
 

Color Name- Harvey Amber

Years Produced- 1920s

Description- A specific color made exclusively for the Fred Harvey Restaurants
 

Color Name- Hawthorne

Years Produced- 1927-1928

Description- A slightly dark transparent delicate orchid or lavender color
 

Color Name- Imperial Colors

Years Produced- 1958-1965

Description- Imperial Glass Company acquired the Heisey molds in late 1957. The production of "Heisey" items marked with the Diamond "H" trademark in Imperial colors often creates confusion with today's collectors, especially in scarce Heisey colors like Alexandrite, Dawn, & Limelight. A more detailed discussion of Heisey - Imperial colors will be published in the Imperial section of our library.
 

Color Name- Ivorina Verde

Years Produced- 1899

Description- an opaque, somewhat translucent medium yellow glass. The darker shade (which closely resembles a custard color) is Ivorina Verde. The lighter shade is considered to be Ivory.
 

Color Name- Ivory

Years Produced- 1899

Description- an opaque, somewhat translucent medium yellow glass. The light yellow is Ivory while the darker custard color is considered to be Ivorina Verde.
 

Color Name- Limelight

Years Produced- 1956-1957

Description- re-introduction of the earlier Zircon color. There does not appear to be any difference between the two. The pattern of the items determines if it is Limelight or Zircon.
 

Color Name- Marigold

Years Produced- 1929-1930

Description- a vibrant transparent yellow-orange color with shades of yellow-green at its edges. Problems with the formula resulted in the glass becoming quite unstable. It often develops crazing and even shatters without warning.
 
 

Color Name- Milk Glass, refer to Opal

 

Color Name- Moongleam, Early

Years Produced-

Description- transparent green which was very close to the earlier Emerald color. It was soon changed to a lighter shade of green.
 

Color Name- Moongleam

Years Produced- 1925-1935

Description- transparent light green which often varies in shades.
 

Color Name- Opal

Years Produced- 1899

Description- opaque milk glass. Often translucent and shows a fiery opalescent quality when seen under a bright light.
 

Color Name- Red

Years Produced-

Description- experimental  color. Often found on handles of beer mugs.
 

Color Name- Rose

Years Produced- circa 1900

Description- considered an experimental color and is a true pale pink. A number of items are known in this color.
 

Color Name- Sahara

Years Produced- 1930-1937

Description- a transparent true yellow color.
 
 

Color Name- Slag Glass

Years Produced- 1957-1965

Description- Heisey did not produce slag glass. An experimental #4157 Steele rose bowl was made in an opaque tangerine slag. Items often considered to be Heisey's Slag glass were actually produced by the Imperial Glass Company using Heisey molds. Even though the item may have the Diamond "H" trademark, it was made by Imperial not Heisey.
 

Color Name- Stains/Flashed

Years Produced-

Description- Early patterns are often found with an addition Amber or Red color applied over crystal. Along with the gold, they are considered a decoration.
 

Color Name- Stiegal Blue

Years Produced- 1933-1941

Description- transparent cobalt blue color.
 

Color Name- Sultana

Years Produced- 1951

Description- a transparent deep rich amber color made only in a few items for a short period.
 

Color Name- Tangerine

Years Produced- 1932-1935

Description- a transparent glowing orange color very much like the fruit. This is a struck color, which means the true color does not appear until the glass is reheated when it then takes on a red-orange appearance. Since the color is heat dependent, items range from a nice orange to a deep almost red. Some items take on an amberina shading.
 

Color Name- Ultramarine Blue

Years Produced- circa 1896

Description- transparent teal blue. an unusual color found a few very early patterns.
 
 

Color Name- Vaseline, refer to Canary, Early

 

Color Name- Zircon

Years Produced- 1936-1939

Description- a greenish blue transparent color. Identical to the later 1956-57 Limelight. Identification depends upon the pattern of the item
